Jeremiah A. KeatingSeptember 9, 2023 Laguna, California
Jeremiah A. Keating died peacefully just after sunrise on Saturday, September 9, 2023 in southern California. He was surrounded by his loving family as they prayed the rosary. Upon his passing Jeremiah was honored as a veteran with the flag and a standing salutation.
Jeremiah and his family were gifted with time together at his bedside for reflecting upon and celebrating his life through storytelling, laughter, expressions of gratitude, and prayer. Although he is deeply missed, his passing was a testament to his life being one of deep purpose. Above any other accomplishment in his life, Jeremiah was clear that his greatest desire was to be of help and support to his family. The stories of sailing adventures, of tapping maple trees, of countless gourmet Sunday meals, of his support of his children’s educations and dreams, all reflected a job well done.
Jeremiah was born in Pittsburgh, PA on January 10, 1940 to Alice and James Keating. He graduated from Wheeling Jesuit College before serving as a lieutenant in the Navy in Vietnam. After his military service he pursued a career as a finance executive in the aerospace industry. In 1964 Jeremiah began what he considered his most important endeavor- building a life with his wife Mary. They raised three daughters and delighted in six grandchildren together. On August, 22nd 2023 they celebrated their fifty-ninth wedding anniversary by reflecting that through all their adventures together they had learned the same thing; what mattered most was that through it all they had each other.
Jeremiah is survived by his wife Mary, his daughters Alice, Margaret, and Caroline and their partners Andy, Chris and Peter and, his grandchildren Henry, Sofia, Zoe, Roman, Cal, and Lucky, his sister Mary, and his sister-in-law Peggy. Jeremiah was blessed with many wonderful nieces and nephews with whom he shared fond memories from visits and reunions throughout the years.
Memorial arrangements are pending and will be posted here. In lieu of flowers it would be an honor to Jeremiah’s legacy for gifts to be directed to the Pacific Marine Mammal Center in Laguna Canyon. Those who knew Jeremiah knew of his love of the sea. Above all he was a husband and father. After that he was a fisherman and a sailor. Now and forever he will be our old man and the sea and dearly missed.
